Wine OR Wine & Food

The Manhattan Park District Foundation is proud to announce that the SECOND ANNUAL ROUND BARN WINE FESTIVAL will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2009 at the Baker-Koren Round Barn Farm located on Route 52, the North Gateway to Manhattan, Illinois.

This year’s event will begin at 4:00 p.m. with music from “Fernandez & Kimball”, an elegant ensemble that performs Latin inspired music. The Wine Festival will include ten free tastings showcasing 36 wines from around the world and microbrewery beers. Appetizers will be provided complimenting the various wines and beers that will be available. Later in the evening, entertainment will be provided by the “Funhouse Band”, a professional five-piece band in the Chicago Southland area since 2003 performing a wide variety of musical styles, ranging from blues to some of today’s most popular hits.  The evening will also include educational wine seminars along with food available for purchase from “Parmesans Wood Stone Pizza” and “Charleston’s Bar and Grill”. Wine may also be purchased from “CD Wine & Liquors” and microbrewery beers from “Berkot’s Super Foods”.

THE BAKER-KOREN ROUND BARN FARM is listed as a Will County Historical Landmark. This property preserves history dated back to the 1832 settlers of Will County, Manhattan, Illinois. The historical 100 foot diameter Round Barn was built in 1898 using the lumber from Chicago’s Columbian World Exposition after it was dismantled in 1893. The Oak Trees are what is left of the Five Mile Oak Grove and is documented to be at one time a heavily traveled trail between Hickory Creek and the Des Plaines River. Jackson Creek is adjacent to the property and has a Class 1 Illinois Stream Status. The 103 acres contain multiple uses; a few being, passive recreation which includes the open space, stream, wetlands, riparian habitat and the oak grove. Active recreation will incorporate a sports complex with playground areas and other amenities. The Historical Buildings and educational opportunities are sure to draw a large diversity of visitors from all over.  The acquisition of this property was made possible through the Manhattan Park District, Owner of Record, the Will County Forest Preserve District ($2,000,000.00 financial partner in return for a Conservation Easement on the property), The Conservation Foundation, Will County Executive Larry Walsh (former State Senator), State Senator A.J. Wilhelmi, and State Representative Jack McGuire. The Legislators current and past supported state funding through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, in an acquisition grant for $750,000.00.

Proceeds from this event will go toward the planned preservation, restoration and development of the Historical Buildings, open space, oak grove, wet lands and future recreation.

THIS HISTORIC “ROUND BARN FARM” WINE TASTING EVENT PROMISES TO BE A VERY ENJOYABLE EVENING FOR ALL WHO ATTEND (Must be 21 years old to attend).
