SF Natural Wine Week – Italian “Orange” Wines
Orange wines: ". . .an otherwise heterogeneous group of white wines linked together by the technique of leaving freshly crushed juice in contact with the grape skins for a prolonged period." Eric Asimov, New York Times.
As a proud sponsor of SF Natural Wine Week, we'll be hosting one of the most comprehensive (and geeky!) tastings of Italian natural whites. Affectionately known as "orange" wines due to the color resulting from long skin contact, these represent the ultimate in ecologically responsible winemaking and sustainable grape farming. While defining "natural winemaking" has proved somewhat elusive, the following characteristics, in whole or in part, have come to loosely define the category:
- Sustainable, organic or biodynamic farming
- No pesticides, herbicides or other toxic chemicals
- No reserve osmosis or concentrators
- No or low sulfites
- And most importantly, use of ambient or native yeasts
We hope you'll join us for a star-studded line-up of Italian "orange" wines, representing some of the very best Italy has to offer from true masters of sustainable agriculture and natural winemaking.
