Great Cooks and their Books: Julia Child at Astor Center
October 14, 2009 (Wed)
from 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM
New York, NY
Cost: $125
Event ID #265770
In this new, hands-on series, we'll explore some
of the most influential culinary personalities and their impact on the
American home cook.
Unquestionably, nearly every serious home cook in the '60s and '70s was heavily influenced by the beloved Julia Child. Under direction from both her enormously popular televisions programs and best-selling books, Julia taught Americans to lose their fear and to have fun when attempting some of the most classic dishes in the French repertoire. Now the subject of the soon-to-be-released film, JULIE AND JULIA, Julia Child continues to influence a new generations of cooks. Always focused on the realities and average capabilities of most at-home-chefs, Julia infused a sense of adventure and excitement in exploring new tastes. At the core, she imparted on each of us a sense of determination to improve our culinary skills.
In this first class in our series we will take a look at all of Julia's culinary contributions and cook a meal based on some of her most classic recipes. Our menu will include Salade Nicoise, Boeuf Bourguignon, Julia's Classic Roast Chicken, Green Beans with Hollandaise Sauce, Mushroom Duxelles, and a Traditional French Apple Tart with Apricot Glaze.
Finally, the class will wind down in the true style of The French Chef, over your culinary creations and a glass of wine (or two…).
