Behind the Vendy's at Astor Center

New York, NY

Street
food in New York City has come a long way in the past couple of years,
and when Sean Basinski (founder of the Street Vendor Project ),
returned to the city after a considerable absence to begin planning
this year's Vendy Awards, he was faced with a host of questions about
who could participate and the very identity of street food.
We had those questions, too: Should Vendy award competition be limited to carts, or include trucks too, or any old contraption that exchanges food for money? Should the nomination process reflect categories, so that traditional kebab-type fare still gets attention in the face of hipster tacos, schnitzels and things, desserts and the like? Do cupcakes count? Why are there suddenly so many mobile meal options, anyway?
For answers, we're asking the experts. In a lead up to this year's awards, we'll host Sean, Vendy judge Zach Brooks of Midtown Lunch , Vendy judge alum Ed Levine of Serious Eats, and at least one of the participating vendors for a panel discussion about the state of street food in New York City.
Light snacks and prosecco will be served, and we're working on turning the street in front of Astor Center into a one-time night market with a couple of participating vendors ready and waiting to sell you snacks after the discussion is over.
The Vendy Awards and our "Behind the Vendys" event are fundraisers to support the Street Vendor Project of the Urban Justice Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides a voice for the thousands of people who sell food and merchandise on the streets of our city. $5 of each $15 ticket will go to the Project.
