Spainish Wine Dinner at Andrew Blair's

August 25, 2009 at 6:30

We will start off the night by tasting five wines.

 1)  2008 Pelta - The 2008 Pelta is 80% Tempranillo and 20% Monastrell raised in stainless steel. It exhibits a fragrant nose of underbrush, blackberry, and blueberry pie. Surprisingly rich and deep for a wine of this price, it should drink well for another three years.

2)  2007 Puntazo G - The 2007 Puntazo is sourced from 75 year old vines in Navarra. Purple-colored, its aromatics of black cherry and raspberry leap from the glass. On the palate, the wine has excellent breadth and concentration, light tannin, and a lengthy, pure finish. Drink it over the next 3-4 years.

3)  2006 Molleda - 100% Garnacha - no notes on this.

4) 2007 G2 - The G Series focuses on Garnacha. The 2007 Afinus G2 is sourced from 60 year old vines in Montsant. Purple-colored, it offers an expressive perfume of cherry and raspberry leading to a wine with ripe fruit, savory flavors, and a spicy finish. Drink it over the next 2-3 years.

5) 2008 Nabuko - The 2008 Nabuko is composed of 50% Monastrell and 50% Syrah aged for three months in French oak. Purple-colored, it reveals a fragrant nose of smoke, underbrush, blueberry, and blackberry jam. On the palate spice notes and black licorice emerge along with layers of savory blue fruit. Well balanced and lengthy, this seamless effort can be enjoyed over the next four years.

The dinner menu:

Tri-Park Greens  cherry tomatoes, local cured ham, crumbled bleu cheese, toasted almonds and balsamic dressing.

Wine

2007 M5 - The 2007 M5 is sourced from Yecla. Dark ruby-colored, the nose contains enticing, slightly roasted notes of mineral, pencil lead, and an amalgam of black fruits. On the palate, this meaty effort has excellent density, layered flavors, and a remarkably long finish for a wine of its humble price.

Yellowfin Tuna Napoleon

Diced Shashimi tuna with olive tapehnade, cherry tomatoes, double yogurt aioli and fried won tons.

2007 G5 - The 2007 Puerta Bonita G5 is sourced from 120 year old vines in the new Madrid D.O. Opaque purple with a slightly brooding nose, with coaxing black cherry and raspberry aromas emerge. This is followed by a structured wine with 2-3 years of aging potential. The flavors have depth and concentration marked by spicy, savory red fruits. While this excellent effort will evolve in the cellar, few purchasers will be able to delay their gratification for more than a matter of hours

Pan Fried North Carolina Trout

Corn maque choux, sauteed okra, sage and brown butter sauce.

2006 JC Vizcarra - The 2006 J.C. Vizcarra was aged for 9 months in French and American oak. It delivers enthralling notes of cedar, bacon, wood smoke, mineral, and blueberry and blackberry. It has more structure as well as greater depth and concentration. Give this hedonistic effort 2-3 years in the cellar and drink it through 2020.

Meatloaf with baked mac-n- cheese, greenbeans and bbq sauce.

2004 Libranza - The 2004 Libranza spent 14 months in French and American oak. Inky purple-hued, it has a complex bouquet of smoke, cedar, tar, pencil lead, espresso, and blackberry. This is followed by a plush, full-bodied, intense wine in which spice notes and licorice emerge. It conceals enough tannin to evolve for 5-7 years and should drink well through 2035

Fresh Strawberries with basil ice cream and coffee.
