 Bacchus & Comus

Having taken a little sabbatical, we return again to kick off the autumn season with a selection of wines from one of the leading producers in Luxembourg – Abi Duhr. Abi is an old friend of mine – we judged together at some of Le Grand Jury Européen wine tastings and is certainly not one of your run of the mill wine producers.

Now you might well ask – why Luxembourg? Don’t they make pretty boring German-type wines there? Well, this might have been the case 20 or 30 years ago, but like in most wine producing countries, the standard of winemaking has come on a ton. And no greater example of this can be found than by drinking Abi’s wines.

Whilst Abi is still responsible for wine making at the long-established family vineyards (Domaines Aly Duhr), his main work is at his Ch. Pauqué, which is 100% owned by him and it is the wines from this estate that we shall be concentrating on. Château Pauqué is a small Estate of about 5 ha which has his vineyards spread over 6 villages from Schengen to Wasserbillig. Two lines of wines are produced - the classic one (Riesling & Pinot Gris) and one with Burgundian characteristics, focused on wines fermented and aged in oak barrels. The grapes are normally harvested from the beginning of October to mid November in order to get the best possible maturity. The botrytised grapes do not see skin contact.  Long fermentations, (the 2008 finished their fermentations only in July 2009) with natural yeasts give Château Pauqué wines a characteristic creamy harmony.

Over 70 % of the vineyards are located on the steepest hills of the Luxembourg Mosel Valley. With over 50 % of Riesling (some of the vineyards have been planted more than 60 years ago) the Château Pauqué Estate has one of the highest Riesling  percentages in Luxembourg. Additionally, Abi grows Elbling, Auxerrois, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay.

We will have a chance to taste his range of wines and drink some at the dinner Sonia has prepared for the occasion. The USP of this dinner is that all the wines are white, so there will be some challenging food and wine matches (particularly with the grouse) which we hope you will find intriguing!
