The inspiration for all those Rhone-style blends from Paso Robles to Sonoma is right here in the Southern Rhone. Grenache is king, along with Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan, Cinsaut and Counoise. These are bold wines that taste of the region they come from and marry nicely with the same kinds of grilled Mediterranean cuisine many of us are eating this time of year. Chateauneuf is the greatest appellation, its wines grown in vineyards where the rocks are as big as bowling balls. In their youth they are bold and charming, after a decade or more they become spicy and elegant. Nearby are the villages of Vacqueyras and Gigondas, both producing striking, serious wines. Lastly, the ultimate French picnic red, Cotes du Rhone. Tonight we explore these fascinating, authentic wines. Scheduled: ¨Vieux Telegraphe, Bosquets des Papes, Ch. Montmirail. SEATING LIMITED—RESERVATIONS REQUIRED (800) 505-5564
