Event Tasting Notes:
Penfolds 2007 Bin 51 Riesling: Created as part of the evolving Penfolds white wine development program, the Bin 51 Eden Valley Riesling captures the essence of the Eden Valley Riesling style. The region's high altitude and cool climate produces complex Rieslings for long term cellaring. Nose: orange blossoms and pink lady apples. Palate: blood orange, passionfruit, limeleaf, balanced with zesty lemon acid. Tightly structured, will cellar 5-7 years.
Penfolds 2006 yattarna Chardonnay: Yattarna Chardonnay is the result of one of the most comprehensive and highly publicised wine development projects in Australia -- an aspiration to create a white wine to rival the standards of Penfolds Grange. Nose: oven-fresh almond biscotti, lemon creme brulee and lemon curd, some white peach and gentle toasty oak. Palate: Citrus to the fore, subtle complexities, Integrated creamy French oak. Long finish with lovely texture. Peak drinking: to 2015.
Penfolds 2006 St. Henri Shiraz: A highly successful, alternative expression of Shiraz and an intriguing counterpoint to Grange. Unusual among high quality Australian reds as it does not rely on new oak. Nose: floral, perfumed, fresh. Fruitcake mix, pie spices, Cointreau citrus. Subtle praline, liquorice trail. Palate: Medium-full bodied with acid/tannin balance flavour at back-palate. Continuum of saesaparilla, beetroot, lemon, blackcurrant, pomegranate at fore; juniper, bayleaf, menthol linger on finish. Lacy tannins. No oak. Peak drinking: 2015-2030.
Penfolds 2004 Grange: Arguably Australia's most famous wine and is officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia. Grange boasts an unbroken line of vintages from the experimental 1951. Displays fully-ripe, intensely-flavoured and textured Shiraz grapes in combination with new American oak, resulting is a unique Australian style that is now recognised as one of the most consistent of the world's great wines. 96% Shiraz, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon. Peak Drinking: 2016-2050.
Penfolds Grandfather Tawny Port: in 1844, Christopher rawson Penfold planted vines on the slopes of Magill to produce fortified wines. Now the historic bluestone cellars are home to a tradition of fortified winemaking dating back over 150 years. in 1915, an oak cask containing a blend of the finest tawnies the company possessed was set aside for the exclusive use of the Penfold family. This became known as ‘the grandfather’ due to the great age of the oldest tawnies in the blend. Peak drinking: now.
The House of Penfolds: As Penfolds' Chief Winemaker Peter Gago is the custodian of a valuable winemaking heritage. He is only the fourth man to be entrusted with Australia's greatest wine, Grange.
Peter heads a vastly experienced and extremely talented winemaking team committed to continuing the valuable traditions established by his predecessors. At the same time he encourages the evolution of new Penfolds styles, via different varieties, regions, techniques, innovation.
Peter continuously travels the globe, spreading the Penfolds message and both he, along with his red winemaking team have collected 'Winemaker of the Year' honours from a variety of publications including Wine Enthusiast, Gourmet Traveller and Campbell Mattinson's Big Red Wine Book.
In the world of wine, Penfolds is synonymous with excellence, innovation and even a little magic.
