Wine OR Wine & Food

Every now and then, it's okay to splurge a little. We submit the following for your approval.

2006 Raventos I Blanc Cava
A blend of 60% Macabeo, 20% Xarel-lo and 20% Parellada from 100% estate-bottled fruit, the Brut “L’Hereu” from Raventos is simply one of the best examples of Cava we have tried at any price point! The wine is bright and lively with fruity aromas of lemon and green apple and more complex notes of fresh baked bread. The palate is well structured with tiny bubbles that dance across the palate. This is an ideal Cava to serve by the glass or as a base for Bellinis or other sparkling wine cocktails.

2008 Lietz Eins Zwei Dry '3'
Did you know Eins-Zwei-Dry wine comes from a Grosses Gewächs (or Erstes Gewächs or whatever the hell they call it in this region) called Geisenheimer Rothenberg, and could easily have been put into a heavy designer bottle and sold for six times the price? There’s lots of apple and charcuterie and Rainier-cherry aromas; fibrous and crunchy palate, mint is in there too; a crisp Riesling that’s not fruit-driven but with all the 2007 juiciness; there’s a certain asperity on the finish, which is long and mentholated.

2006 Slingshot Cabernet Sauvignon
Consulting winemaker Stephen Test brings more than a quarter century of winemaking experience to his work at Slingshot. A graduate of the UC-Davis Master’s program in Viticulture and Enology, Steve honed his skill practicing the classic, hand-crafted winemaking methods that have proven so successful with Napa Valley wines. Former director of winemaking at Merryvale Vineyards, he now manages his own Stephen Test Wines brand.

Slingshot is a family effort shepherded by James Stewart, one of Napa Valley’s next generation winemakers—a group of young men and women assuming central roles in legacy wine businesses. James joins his peers in focusing on issues surrounding sustainability, preservation, labor practices and maintaining family-owned businesses. Slingshot reflects his ambition to preserve a vital family enterprise and practice meaningful land stewardship—both while producing unpretentious fine wine.

2007 Cristom Mount Jefferson Pinot Noir
The 2007 Mt Jefferson Cuvee is light ruby in color. It has a dusty and cinnamon-scented nose that is reminiscent of a village level Burgundy. It shows off the elegant style of the 2007 vintage with cran-raspberry and higher tone red-fruit notes on the palate. In typical Mt Jefferson style, the wine will gain some meat-on-the-bones in the short term. We believe this wine is a candidate for short term cellaring. But try it now with a foil such as simply prepared roasted poultry finished with pan juices.
