There was a time, with the exception of generic wines, when virtually all Burgundies were seen as 'expensive'. Trying to understand place names, many of which are hyphenated, the name of a vineyard (Climat / lieux-dit), not to mention premier & grand crus, tested the most adventurous wine consumer.
Today, the growers, or merchants name, can still point towards a safe bet, but often it's the sub-region, appellation & even style, that can open-up some terrific value for money.
The standard of wine-making in Burgundy has never been better & young, up & coming growers are reaching new heights. All good news for lovers of delicious Burgundy wine.
