More than a decade ago, an ambitious, dedicated and rambunctious group of California winemakers began to pursue the possibilities of the Rhone varietals in their state. Those tired of the endless procession of Cabernet, Merlot and Chardonnay coming from most California wineries wagered that the flavors and aromas of the Rhone grapes could be a welcome change. At least, the wines could offer attractive alternatives to the perennial favorites.
Due to their daring exploration of the potential of Rhone-style wines, someone in the press or the trade dubbed them "The Rhone Rangers," the varietals in Rhone stable have been wildly successful. The Rhone Valley of France is home to many varieties. Most famous are Grenache and Syrah. These grapes form the backbone of most of the reds produced in the region. Playing second fiddle is Mourvedre. Together these three grapes comprise about 90 percent of the juice in the justly renowned wine, Chateauneuf du Pape. The top white varieties are Viognier, Roussanne, Grenache Blanc and Marsanne.
So here's an opportunity to taste some of the most well respected wines coming from the area. Don't miss out on these beauties.
