"All American Wines"
Notes by Yoko
NV Roederer Estate Anderson Valley Brut $24 Where: Anderson Valley, California Grape: Blend of 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir At the request of Alexander II, Champagne Louis Roederer created Cristal, which was presented in a custom-designed crystal bottle. Cristal became the first prestige cuvee, and to this day, one of the most famous and expensive Champagne in the world. The creator of Cristal, Louis Roederer wanted to produce sparkling wine in the US. After spending two years looking for a property with growing condition similar to the one like Champagne, they found Mendocino’s Anderson Valley. Noted as one of the best domestic sparkling wines, Roederer Estate’s winemaking style is based on two elements: complete ownership of its vineyards and the addition of oak-aged reserve wines to each year’s cuvee. Accompanied by tiny delicate yet persistent bubbles, this is an elegant sparkler with hints of citrus and pear beautifully intergraded with spice and hazelnuts. 2007 Adelsheim Pinot Gris $18 Where: Willamette Valley, Oregon After a summer trip to Europe, David and Ginny Adelsheim dreamed of a vineyard in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. In 1971, this lovely couple’s dream came true and they established family-owned and operated winery and estate vineyards of Adelsheim. Since the first vintage made in a cramped basement winery, “gentle, minimal handling” has been their winemaking philosophy and they have established a great reputation for Pinot Noir. To preserve bight intensity of Pinot Gris character, hand-harvested fruit was slowly fermented in stainless steel tanks at a cool temperature without any oak treatment. This medium-bodied Pinot Gris displays beautiful balance of lively acidity and rich fruit of white peach and pear, with a pinch of delicate spice. For those who enjoy Pinot Grigio but want to try something different with bit more body and flavor, here is a bottle for you. 2006 Picket Fence, Chardonnay $18 Where: Russian River Valley, California Used for fermentation and/or ageing, the use of oak has profound effect on wine, imparting color, flavor, tannin and texture. Common descriptions of wine exposed to oak are: vanilla, caramel, smoke, coconut, cinnamon and cloves. Additionally, the degree of toast on the barrel imparts different flavors, such as mocha and toffee notes in red wine. American oak has wider grain and lower wood tannins with signature sweet vanilla notes, whereas French oak has tighter grain, which offers gradual integration of flavors. In order to broaden the palate and add complexity and structure, this Picket Fence Chardonnay was aged in 50% new French oak with medium-plus toast. Appealing apple and citrus fruit along with a touch of warm spices nicely accompany soft and rich texture of this wine. Fresh seafood of scallops and lobster as well as some of chicken dishes would make a nice partner with this bottle. 2006 Benton Lane, Pinot Noir $25 Where: Willamette Valley, Oregon Grape: Pinot Noir Just like all the BBQs are not created equal, all the Pinot Noirs are not created in a same way. This Benton-Lane Pinot Noir was made from seven different clones of the grape, sourced from Willamette Valley, Oregon. Benton-Lane also uses an innovative fermentation technique called, “pneumatage”, which is a gentle way to extract the flavor and color from the grapes, without the harsh bitter tannins. Aged in French oak barrels for nine months, this wine has aromas of cherries, red plums, hibiscus and a touch of mushroom earthiness. Smooth tannins give a velvety texture on the palate along with mixed berry and chocolate flavors. This versatile Pinot Noir is happy to put arms around a wide range of BBQ favorites from grilled salmon, chicken, beef to bacon cheeseburgers! 2007 Hedges Family Estate, CMS $15 Where: Columbia Valley, Washington State Grape: Blend of 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 51% Merlot and 7% Syrah Originally planted by Italian and German immigrants in the 60’s and 70’s, vineyards of Washington State have been enjoying quite a transformation in a past decade or two. In a state famous for rain, majority of vineyards are located in warm, dry and sunny eastern part, away from the wet western portion of the Cascade Mountain. Major varieties here are powerful and structural Cabernet sauvignon and juicy and lush Merlot. Some of the top producers started producing Bordeaux-style blends since the mid-90’s and one of the good examples is the Hedges Family Estate. CMS stands for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, which make up this wonderful wine. Juicy fruit of ripe blackberry and black cherry, on the palate is followed by hints of vanilla and balanced acidity. 2005 Clos LaChance, Hummingbird Series “Buff-Bellied”, Zinfandel $17 Where: Central Coast, California For landscaping purpose and to realize the dreams of being a vintners, Bill and Brenda Murphy planted a few rows of Chardonnay in their Saratoga backyard. The wines made from these grapes became good enough to sell to the public and that was the point when Bill and Brenda formed Clos LaChance. Its aesthetic beauty and ability to keep other birds away from the grapes, Hummingbird is the symbol of Clos LaChance and its picture is displayed on their wine labels. From their Hummingbird Series, this 2005 Zinfandel is named after a true species of Buff-Bellied Hummingbirds, which tend to nest in bushes low to the ground, similar to the head trained Zinfandel vines. This wine exhibits beautiful fruit of blackberry, raspberry complemented by a touch spice and dried herb. Enjoy with grilled meat dishes, hearty pasta and rich/strong cheeses. |
