When you think of Costa Rica, do you automatically think of the finest coffee beans in the world? While this is certainly true, during this extraordinary evening you’ll discover the many other wonders and heritage of this Central American republic. Costa Rica, which means “rich coast” in Spanish, was named by Christopher Columbus and his explorers, who expected to find gold here. Once a Spanish colony, Costa Rica gained its independence in 1821. Since that time, citizens of the world have discovered its lush interior, volcanic mountains, gorgeous beaches, and thriving economy through exportation of everything from coffee and bananas to computer chips! Among European explorers, the first recorded visitor was Christopher Columbus in 1502. The natives he encountered wore golden disks around their necks. He called this new place “Costa Rica”, meaning “Rich Coast”, because he thought the gold came from there. The gold had actually come from other countries and had been obtained as a trade item from native traders along the coast. Spanish treasure seekers eventually discovered their error and went elsewhere in their quest for gold. The irony is that Christopher Columbus actually picked the perfect name for our country. The wealth overlooked by the Spaniards is the rich biological diversity that includes more than half a million species of plants and wildlife! (More than 850 species of birds, 600 species of butterflies, 1200 species of orchids, and 237 species of mammals). While Costa Rica covers a mere 0.03 % of the planet’s surface (the size of West Virginia; a little more than 20.000 square miles), the nation is endowed with over 5% of all life forms on earth. You’ll discover that the Embassy itself mirrors the loveliness and hospitality of Costa Rica with its design by famous architect Appleton P. Clark III in the Renaissance Revival style. Our event tonight will take place outdoors, so we will enjoy the summer evening air.
