Linden says:

Originally part of the St-Vivant Abbey, it became the property of Nicolas-Joseph Marey in 1791 and later that of his widow Jeanne-Charlotte Monge. In 1966 the Romanée St-Vivant belonging to Domaine Marey-Monge was farmed out to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, and DRC then bought it outright in 1988. Though DRC owns over half this grand cru vineyard, annual production today is typically around twelve to thirteen thousand bottles.

In Richard Olney’s great book Romanée-Conti he asked Lalou Bize-Leroy, Aubert and his father Henri de Villaine to describe each of DRC’s crus. Romanée St-Vivant they described as follows: Each year, Romanée St-Vivant casts a spell of awe before the miracle of its delicacy and its femininity, its irresistible determination to seduce, before which one is helpless. Its perfumes are bewitching; one cannot help loving it and, only then, does one realize that behind this grace resides a strength in such perfect balance that, at first, it was imperceptible. Clive Coates is in accord, in perhaps more prosaic language. Compared to DRC’s Echezeaux and Grands Echezeaux, its Romanée St-Vivant ‘ – a significant step up – is lighter, softer, much more elegant and more feminine – Musigny in character.’

Our tasting of 13 vintages will be moderated by Burgundy expert Anthony Hanson MW:
