Linden says: Alongside Chateau Cheval Blanc, the only chateau classified St.-Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé ‘A’, clearly also alongside Cheval Blanc, it’s greatest. Quality since Alain Vauthier gained control in 1996 has been considered stellar, making the miniscule production virtually unprocurable. Yet here is a chateau with real depth in mature examples. At the last Fine Wine Experience vertical in January 2005 I thought the 1945 still good; the 1949 ethereal and fragrant; a 1959 rich and sweet. Ausone got through the great frost of 1956 retaining its old vines, with no replanting until 1976, so all the pre-76 vintages should be very interesting. The ’29 is a famous top example of that vintage – the ’76 too. Our 15 vintages span 8 decades – we should be in for a very interesting evening. 2005, 2001, 1998, 1996, 1990, 1989, 1983, 1976, 1971, 1966, 1962, 1961, 1955, 1942 and 1929.
