“Tasting a Dagueneau wine for the first time was a revelation. His Sauvignon Blancs had an unexpected purity and clarity to them. The flavors were intense but nuanced. It wasn’t the fruit that was piercing, as in so many Sauvignon Blancs, but the freshness and the focus. As powerful a personality as he was, his wines did not exalt the stature of the winemaker so much as the beauty of the terroir.”
Eric Asimov, The New York Times obituary
In September, 2008, the world lost one of its greatest winemakers and most interesting personalities, Didier Dagueneau. He died (flying an ultra-light plane) just as he lived and made wine: taking risks.
This evening, we pay tribute to Dagueneau by tasting 15 Blanc Fume de Pouilly that represent the pinnacle of Dagueneau’s craft. These include: 2000 Silex (92WS) • 2001 Silex (94WS) • 2002 Pur Sang (96WS) • 2002 Silex (95WS) • 2003 Silex (93WS) • 2004 Blanc de Fumé (94WS) • 2004 Buisson Renard (95WS) • 2004 Pur Sang (93IWC, 95WS) • 2004 Silex (94WA, 92IWC, 96WS) • 2005 Blanc de Fumé (93WS) • 2005 Buisson Renard (95WS) • 2005 Pur Sang (92WA, 97WS) • 2005 Silex (96WS) • 2006 Pur Sang (92WS) • 2006 Silex (93WS)
