Boston Wine School ~ Que Syrah Shiraz: A Comparative Tasting

The oldest archeological evidence of large-scale winemaking comes from the ancient city of Shiraz in southern Iran. 8,000 years later, Shiraz (the wine) is the darling of the wine world, but it comes largely from Australia now. The French call this grape Syrah, and some California winemakers can't seem to figure out what to call it. This class will begin by tasting rugged southern French Syrah like Crozes-Hermitage, then we'll taste our way though California and Washington State expressions of the grape (they call it both Syrah and Shiraz) and finish with some delicious Aussies. If you ever wonder why Shiraz is such a world wine phenomenon, one taste will tell you why. At the end of the class -- if there's any wine left -- we'll try our hand at making the world's first Syrah-Shiraz blend right in class! |
