New York, NY

Join The Wine Workshop for a unique experience tasting a true California classic. The older wines of Louis Martini are what traditional California wine is all about, and a style of wine that is rapidly becoming extinct. These wines are elegant, structured and built to last! The knock on California wines is that they do not age as well as their Bordeaux counterparts; we think this tasting may have something to say about that! It will be a unique experience to taste these mature wines and see how beautifully California wine can age, from a time when the seeds of an industry were still being planted. Louis Michael Martini was born in 1887 near Genoa, Italy. At age 12 he traveled to San Francisco to help his father, who had a small business selling fresh seafood to local merchants. Father and son first made wine in their backyard in 1906. Throughout Prohibition, Louis Martini made wine to be used in religious services. He opened his first winery in 1922, during the depths of Prohibition, showing foresight and intuition that would serve him all his life. At the end of Prohibition in 1933, Louis M. Martini began building a new winery in St. Helena, a few miles north of the town of Napa and a Californian legend was born. Wines include: 1947 Louis Martini Cabernet Sauvignon Special Reserve; 1954, 1958, 1959, 1963, 1964, 1968, 1973, 1974 Louis Martini Cabernet Sauvignon; 1962 Louis Martini Private Reserve Cabernet; 1958 Louis Martini Private Reserve Barbera; 1974 & 1988 Louis Martini Special Selection Zinfandel.
