Putting a little Soca dance music into the mix, Rougher All Stars
evolved from the internationally celebrated ska, rock steady and
Grammy nominated reggae band, “Blue Riddim.” The first American
reggae band to play at the Jamaican Reggae Sunsplash, “Blue Riddim” was that year
unanimously acclaimed best performers. Their subsequent album, Alive In Jamaica,
was nominated for a Grammy in 1986 and the hit single “Nancy Reagan,” topped the
international music charts.
The Blue Riddim Band remains the only American reggae band to be nominated by
the Grammys for Best Reggae Album of the Year. Their primary influences, from the
foundations of Coxson Dodd’s Studio One label and Duke Reid’s Treasure Isle label,
became the foundation for the Rougher All Stars, which features some Blue Riddim
alumni, along with an all-star modern day lineup of Kansas City-Lawrence area
musicians. Rock steady, at Holy-Field.
