Living in infamy as the day that Julius Caesar was murdered, the Ides of March (March 15, or mid-March in the earliest Roman calendars) was also considered a time of renewal and rebirth.  In ancient Rome, it was considered the beginning of the New Year and a time for celebration.  Of course, wine was hugely important for the Romans as it is today, and wines from Lazio and Campania were often drunk as they were found in close proximity.  Today, Lazio, the province that encompasses Rome in the center of the Boot, is known for fresh, charming Frascati and Est! Est!! Est!!!  Just south of Lazio, Campania’s volcanic soils boast seriously good reds and whites made from Aglianico, Falanghina, Greco, and Fiano.  Abruzzo, tucked to the east of Lazio, gives us deep, rustic reds from Montepulciano vineyards that slope down to the Adriatic. The ancient Romans don’t mind that we’re tucking in Abruzzo for more red wine diversity, in the spirit of Bacchanalian excess!
