Five Merlots from Five Countries
Saturday, March 10th
Trapp Family Lodge Wine Cellar
Merlots got a bad rap a few years ago with the movie Sideways which sang the praises of Pinot Noir and poo-pooed Merlot. I sold wine for a Vermont distributor at the time and we saw our Merlot sales dip while we had a hard time keeping Pinot Noir in stock.
I noticed that the next vintage of Merlots out of California were better. It seemed to me that the movie had that effect, a good one. Merlot had become so popular that I believe some wineries had grown a bit lazy with their Merlot programs and the movie was a wake-up call.
There is nothing inferior about the grape itself. I think California Chardonnays are currently going through a similar identity crisis.
An inside joke from Sideways is that the final bottle of the movie which Miles praises is a famous Bordeaux made from non-other than Merlot.
Price is $20. Please call or see the front desk to place reservations. 802 253-5742. Doors open @ 4:00. I suggest you arrive no later than 5:00 to avoid feeling rushed. People come and go during the tasting which is an informal walk around format. We end at 6:00
