Today’s sommeliers use the terms “Old World” and “New World” with abandon to describe the style and origin of a wine. What do they actually mean, and can you, the attentive consumer, tell the difference? Loosely described, “New World” refers to wines from both Americas and Down Under, with fruit-driven character, up-front and delish, low on the earth tones and displaying a liberal use of oak. “Old World”, Europe, telegraphs a wine that is terroir-driven, with a strong sense of place, more restrained on the fruit and oak meter, with subtle complexity. We’ll lead you through a blind tasting of classic noble varietals (Pinot Noir, Cabernet, Chardonnay, Syrah), and you’ll have the fun challenge of determining whether or not the wines are European. With lots of helpful hints from us, of course! Prizes will be given the luckiest guessers, or most shrewd Sherlocks.
