Vertical Tasting,  Wine’s Time Capsule                                                                                    by Dave Williams

Supply and demand affect a wine’s price. So what creates demand for some wines more than others? It could be the composition of grapes that went into making the wine – Bordeaux wines from France for example. Another could be the winemaker or the wine consultant – Paul Draper of Ridge or Michel Rolland. Or, it could be the location, or estate, or specific vineyard (“terroir”) like Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough, New Zealand. Of all these influences that affect the value or price of wine, the year in which it is grown may be the most significant factor.

Wine is meant to embrace year to year variation while still keeping focus on intended goals for each wine. The point of our event is for you to taste and understand the impact a year can make in a wine.  In an effort to connect your cerebral awareness with your sensual skills, the winemakers will explain the opportunities, the challenges, and their decisions in growing grapes and making the wine each represented year. Some differences may be very subtle, while others may present significantly. Our intent is to help you understand some of the causes that affect the taste.

On Friday, March 16, 2018 at the Hilton Harrisburg starting at 7p.m. we will open the time capsules of three wines from three different years from two winemakers. Jan Waltz of Waltz Vineyards will present his Chardonnay and Red Blend wines and Richard Blair of Setter Ridge (formerly Blair Vineyards) will present one of his Pinot Noirs. The winemakers will walk us through the variables and decisions made throughout the year in their dance with Mother Nature (the weather) and the wine-making process.

Members: $55            Patrons: $50             Nonmembers: $65

Park in the Walnut Street Garage and present your parking ticket at the Hilton Front Desk or Gift Shop to receive parking for $2.50.
