Driving through the Sonoma Valley one sees miles and miles of plastic netting covering the vines, attempting to protect the precious crop of grapes from destructive birds. At Huntington we use a much more natural method of protecting our grapes. Every year, Falconer Jim Tigan sets up residence in the vineyard with his Falcons; Strega, Rozalyn and Mavro. Several times a day, these falcons patrol the vineyard, scaring off the starlings. As starlings send out scouts to find feeding areas, the presence of a natural predator is all that is needed to scare the birds away. It’s simple, it’s effective and it’s green. If you live near to or plan to be in the Healdsburg area in the next couple of weeks and would like to see these amazing falcons in action, call us at 707.433.5215 to schedule a complimentary tour. Tours are scheduled daily at 10:30am and again at 4:00 pm. (Just don’t expect to see any starlings!)
