Bob Sellers has been collecting and eating wild mushrooms for the past 29 years. Mushroom foraging was a wintertime activity to get him “outdoors” during the rainy season. In 1984, he was one of the founding members of the Fungus Federation of Santa Cruz, a local club with about 250 members and whose theme is to keep the Fun in Fungus! He is the current local foray “minister”, taking groups of people out into the woods on guided trips to help find and identify local mushrooms. Most of the forays are held in the Santa Cruz area 3-4 times from Nov-March to take advantage of the fungi that appear at different times during the season. He is also a wild mushroom food vendor and I.D. expert at the annual Santa Cruz Fungus Fair held each January. Bob has appeared on radio and TV programs talking about edible and poisonous mushrooms, and is on the ER call list to ID mushrooms for people with suspected mushroom poisoning. Bob has also been an amateur winemaker for 23 years.
