We are very happy (and fortunate) to have Gaetana here with us, she literally changed her flight to be here this Friday to host a tasting and share her wines.
Many of you are familiar with her wonderful wines. They are the forerunners in the top best selling wines in the store and loved by top restaurants here, New York and throughout Italy.
These wines are also my favorite wines to suggest when people come looking for wines for a tasting. Reason being, they show a great example of 2 different varieties and then, the blend of the two.
Aside from her white wines, which range from the fresh crisp racy nature of Sicily's Inzolia grape to the lush rich creamy texture of Zagra (Grillo/Inzolia) it is her red wines that I like to play with.
It basically comes down to simple math:
Frappato + Nero d'Avola = Cerasuolo di Vittoria ah! math that you can taste...
For me, it is fascinating to taste the il Frappato first - bright sun-dried strawberry fruit, then the dark pepper and smoky rich flavor of the il Moro (Nero d'Avola) next. And finally, the Cerasuolo di Vittoria, the two flavors/wines combined together in yet another wine, a perfect marriage - it is almost like understanding magic. Think of it like an experiment of flavor - it is a wonderful, simple and unusual way to learn and also to show someone how to pull nuances out from a particular wine, learn the characteristics of a variety and register everything, the whole experience, in your mind.
Similar to the power of a fantastic meal you had years ago, you remember it so well you could almost taste it again... same goes for wine - After tasting with Gaetana, you'll never forget what Frappato tastes like...
this should be a very enjoyable and enlightening tasting and you'll have something new and fun to share with your friends
see you this Friday 6-8pm

A little history of Cerasuolo di Vittoria for you

Cerasuolo di Vittoria D.O.C.G. was the first Sicilian red wine to win DOC recognition in 1973. Its roots are very ancient, as evidenced by the jars (4th-3rd centuries BC) uncovered in the archaeological excavations of Camarina and relics from ships that sank in the gulf. To trace its production, we must go back to the year 1600 when the city of Vittoria was founded by Vittoria Colonna, who promised two hectares of land to the first 75 colonists on the condition that each plant a vineyard. This contributed to starting the wine business that has been very active to this day- In 1808. Abbot Paolo Balsamo, the Viceroy's envoy to Sicily, noted in his "Travel Diary" that the Vittoria area, "where the soil and climate are extremely suitable for grapes," was almost entirely planted with vines and that the wine it produced was "the best table wine on the entire island". The chronicles for June 1885 talk of the flourishing export activity to the Marseille market and how each day 1,500 farm wagons transported barrels to be stowed on the sailing ships anchored in the gulf.
