In a few short years, Luca Tommasini has managed to place his winery, Sangervasio, among the top producers in Italy. Join the Wine Enthusiasts Guild in tasting the following wines:
Terra d'Aligi Percorino, IGT 2006 - 100% Pecorino. Terra d'Aligi is the super-premium offering from the Spinelli family, who source the best fruit from nearly 400 hectares of hillside vineyards for these wines. Delicious, interesting wine made from the indigenous Pecorino varietal. Medium bodied with hints of melon on the palate, nice crisp acidity on the finish.
Sangervasio Rosso, IGT 2004 - 70% Sangiovese, 20% Merlot, 10% Cabernet. Tuscany, Colline Pisane. Rich, spicy and minerally aromas, with ripe, grapey fruit. Medium- to full-bodied, with fine, fruit-coated tannins and spicy fruit and a hint of tangy oak on the finish.
Sangervasio I Renai, IGT 2003 - 100% Merlot. Tuscany, Colline Pisane. Deep ruby red with rich fruity aromas of blackberry and cherry followed by toasty cocoa and tobacco.
Sangervasio A Sirio, IGT 2003 - 95% Sangiovese, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Tuscany, Colline Pisane. Big and blousy with crushed berry, tobacco and cedar aromas. Full-bodied, round and silky with a beautiful finish. Lots of vanilla and berry character.
These fine wines will be matched with delicious antipasti from AG Ferrari.
Located in the growing region near the city of Pisa, Sangervasio is 18 hectares of hillside vineyards in the lesser-known Colline Pisane DOC, cultivated both organically and bio-dynamically. The estate dates from 754 AC and retains elements of the original fortress and castle. Assisting Luca is another Luca, Luca d'Attoma, one of the hot young consulting winemakers featured in the October 2004 issue of the Wine Spectator, and winemaker of the famed Le Macchiole Bolgheri Messorio, 2004, which received 100pts in the Spectator. Sangervasio winery is truly a Tuscan gem.
