Wine Question

Wine Related Question aging time for Bull's Blood

I have a friend who visited Hungary several years ago and brought back a bottle of Egri Bukaver (Bull's Blood), vintage 1999. She has not opened it yet, and I told her she may want to find out how long the wine can age, as it may have passed already. How long can one hold a bottle of Bull's Blood before it goes bad?

Answer by: Roger C. Bohmrich, MW

Egri Bikaver, associated with the town of Eger in Hungary, can be fairly substantial and sturdy. Unless the bottle in question has been very badly stored, it has probably not gone too far and is unlikely to "go bad" quickly. When in doubt, however, the best strategy is to drink, and not keep, any wines that are unknown quantities. I suggest you or your friend prepare a hearty meat dish and pop the cork tonight!
