"The books alone just didn't help". With that, Patrick W Fegan left a cushy job in Chicago and traveled to Burgundy to work the harvest of 1971. He stayed nearly a year in various regions of that country and fleshed out what the books could only hint at. Since then he has made a point of broadening his wine experiences by visiting--and sometimes working in--the vineyards and wineries of five continents.
It didn't hurt: in 1973 he became the wine writer for Chicago Magazine and later other local periodicals. In addition, since 1975, he has taught wine appreciation classes which today remains his first job. In 1984, he founded Chicago Wine School and since then has passed over 20,000 students through his courses and seminars. Lastly, he compiled The Vineyard Handbook: Appellations, Maps and Statistics, the only reference book of its kind.
