More wine is produced in Italy than in any other country in the world. One of the most extraordinary aspects of Italy’s wines is how many are made with unique indigenous grape varietals; Sangiovese, Corvina, Nebbiolo, Negroamaro and Garganega, just to name a few. Perhaps you have never heard of these grape varieties but in this class you will have the opportunity to taste many of them and see that the wines speak for themselves. These grapes, in concert with the unique soils and micro-climates found all over the Italian peninsula, are responsible for making the wines of Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, Amarone, Barolo, Salice Salentino and everything in between. In this class we will explore Italy’s winemaking methods, native grapes, and micro-climates as well as their rich history which has had a profound impact on the styles of wine being made today. We will also discuss how to understand Italian wine labels which can be quite confusing, yet a few simple tools can go a long way in explaining what you are getting. We will taste over 15 different wines from all over Italy ranging in price from $10 to $50. All this while sampling some of Italy’s truffle & Parmigiano inspired cuisine. NB - The food is light regional fare prepared by Jennifer Traul, formerly of Chanterelle in Tribeca. It is served to accompany the wines and is not intended to constitute dinner yet between the small preparations and the cheeses & cured meats you may very well leave more than sated both by wine and food.
