Wine Tasting: Understanding Super-Tuscans
A Study of Toscana's Pioneering Wine Movement
Italian Wine Merchants - 108 East 16th Street

Saturday, August 9, 1:00-3:00 PM, $75

The term "Super-Tuscan" conjures words like creativity, freedom, spirit and defiance. What started as a viticultural experiment carried out by some of Toscana's most prominent producers in defiance of DOC and DOCG regulations in the early ‘70s resulted in a movement that became a model for expressing the qualitative potential of terroir. Coined by the American press more than three decades ago, there is no denying the impact these wines have had, not only in Toscana, but on Italy as a whole. While the term has been abused, there is a selection of wines in this category that demand attention. An IWM Sommelier will take you through the history of the Super-Tuscan movement, the impact it has had, where it is going, and why this classification is not just about Cabernet and Merlot. This tasting was created with the aspiring enthusiast in mind and will include eight wines ranging from Tenuta dell'Ornellaia's Le Serre Nuove to a Tuscan effort in Trentino and Sardegna.
