Iowa-born Richard Figge, former winemaker at Estancia, got a bank loan and started his own label, Figge Cellars. Sourcing top quality vineyard-specific fruit from various top plots throughout the Monterey region, Figge focuses on producing handcrafted, small production Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah. His wines, which debuted with the 2005 vintage, have been scooped up as quickly as he can make them, which is only as quickly as the wines choose to make themselves. With a goal of limiting production at around 3,000 total cases, Figge Cellars will remain a shining star in the Monterey wine skyscape.
