Years ago brewers had the summer off. Not because they wanted it, but because no one had invented refrigeration yet. Yeast apparently does not like warm beer either. The solution was fairly simple, brew all your beer in March and crank up the alcohol content, and you'll have all the beer you need. This style has become known as Oktoberfest. It's a dark full bodied beer. It has somewhere between 5.0-6.0% ABV and mild hop flavor. We can't mention Oktoberfest without talking about the festivals held around the world. Oktoberfest has been held since 1810 (except in wartime) in Munich towards the end of September and ending in early October. As immigrants came to America, they brought both the beer and the festival with them. While many exist across the nation, Cincinnati holds a festival that rivals the one in Munich. Oktoberfest style beers are great with roasted meat, steamed wursts, and sausages.
