Zinfandel is seen to be uniquely American in its origin. There is no Zinfandel-named grape found anywhere in the Old World. Unlike Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay which trace their origins to France, Riesling which came to prominence in Germany, or even Syrah which scientists believe came from Persia, Zinfandel is all ours and ours alone. Although botanists claim Zinfandel has the same genetic makeup as grapes grown in Italy (Primativo) and in Croatia (Crljenac), the wines made from these grapes bear little resemblance to what is made here. This is why California treasures it as this state’s contribution to the world of wine.
