Event Details

Blind tasting involves tasting and evaluating wines without any knowledge of their identities. This is done because knowing the identity of a wine prejudices the evaluator for or against a wine because of its geographic origin, price, reputation, or some other considerations.

There is an art and science to tasting a wine blind and then deciphering what it is. Like any query there is a set way to solving the problem. Think of a glass of wine as a jigsaw puzzle with the label of the wine the finished product. The sight, smell and taste of the wine are pieces of the puzzle to ultimately determine what it is in the glass.

Tasting a wine blind is one of the best ways to establish an unbiased opinion about the wine. Any knowledge that you have about a wine can cloud your judgment or influence your assessment. To be a wine expert you must develop objectivity in wine evaluation. Therefore, the best way to make an objective (honest?) assessment is to know nothing at all before performing an evaluation and making a determination as to the quality and value of a wine.

This course is a required course for Level III Certification and is used as a preparation course for the 5-wine double-blind Master Candidate exam.

The Blind Tasting Course covers:

Study and analysis of grape varietals

Study of climate characteristics that impact wine character

Soil and geology characteristics that impact wine character

Growing area differentiation in wine

Production techniques impacts

Mechanics of tasting – developing your personal tasting style

Technical and cosmetic defects, and additives in wine

One or two double-blind tasting (of up to 5 wines) each class

Master Candidate double-blind exam at end of course (optional)

Diploma

Plus 500+ pages of course material specifically developed for this course, and approximately 100 wines to taste

These courses and tastings are a must for the serious student of wine, whether you are an informed enthusiast or a professional. You should have completed the Advanced Wine Course and a minimum of one Advanced Regional Course before taking the Blind Tasting course. These prerequisite courses are explained on the following pages:Advanced Wine Course and an Advanced Regional Course.

This class begins July 15th and runs through September 16th.
