August Briggs Wine Tasting
The heart of August Briggs Wines is winemaker August ‘Joe’ Briggs. Joe received his degree in enology from Fresno State University in 1984 and went on to acquire a diverse range of winemaking skills in the 80’s and 90’s at wineries in Oregon’s Willamette Valley and the Central Valley of California. While working at La Crema Winery in the early 90’s, Joe continued to explore an interest in Pinot Noir that was sparked during his time in Oregon. With an eye towards making wine in the Napa Valley, he began a career as a self-described 'gun for hire', a freelance winemaking consultant. Success and a growing reputation during this period allowed Joe to make the leap from consultant to proprietor; in 1995 Briggs & Sons Winemaking Company released three wines under the August Briggs label - the first bottlings under what would soon become one of California’s most respected, artisanal labels. August Briggs Winery is a small family operation with Briggs' wife, Sally, handling sales, his mother working in the tasting room and his dad working in the cellar. The Briggs' teenage boys help out, too, doing everything from building fences to driving the forklift to helping on the bottling line.
Join us at Sigel's Elite, 3209 N Fitzhugh, from 2-5pm, on Saturday, May 17th as we welcome winemaker Joe Briggs to lead us through a tasting of his current releases.
