The 2008 Bedford County Family Farm Tour, a FREE family-oriented event. In celebration of agriculture past and present, this year’s tour will highlight Johnson’s Orchards and Peaks of Otter Winery, a 5th generation family farm established in 1918 and celebrating 90 years at this site. The Johnson family settled on the Peaks of Otter in the 1750s and the parkway has restored their ancestral home called “The Johnson Farm” The primary focus this year is conservation and “green” along with is tree fruits - apples, peaches and nectarines. Most of the fruit is marketed directly to consumers at the farm. A part of the production is made into "Fruit of the Farm" wines at the farm winery. A major interest of the Johnson's is education of school groups that are hosted spring and fall. A flock of sheep, a herd of cattle and host of other animals complete the farming operation. Anticipated activities on Tour Day include orchard and winery tours; tasting wines; viewing the major soil and water conservation practices the farm has established to protect our environment; a demonstration of an antique cider press, farm equipment and livestock; a demonstration hive of honeybees; and Bedford Area Master Gardeners on hand to answer lawn and landscape questions. Additionally, groups scheduled to be with us with information and displays include the Peaks of Otter Soil and Water Conservation District, the Society of St. Andrew, Hunters for the Hungry, The Lynchburg Bird Club, and Bedford 4-H.

You will enjoy food samples and informative demonstrations. You are invited to bring a picnic lunch and a camera, but please leave your pets at home. Lunch and locally produced foods will be available for purchase. Farm Tour 2008 is sponsored by Bedford County, Bedford Agriculture Council, Poplar Forest, Virginia Cooperative Extension, Bedford Tourism, and Area Businesses.
