Paul Westerkamp is the Sommelier and Wine Buyer for Le Soir restaurant of Newton Highlands, Massachusetts.
Paul discovered his love for food and wine while living and working on the island of Maui in Hawaii. During this 10 year period he was able to travel frequently to the wine regions of California to experience and study wine. A passion soon developed. Lengthy discussions about food and wine pairings with various chefs around the islands, such as, Andrew Manion Copley, who is the former Executive Chef of Koele Lodge, fueled Paul’s enthusiasm which is now coming to fruition.
It has been through Paul’s work experience at Le Soir with Chef Mark Allen, since the Fall of 2001, that he has fully realized his passion. Paul’s careful study of the wine and food industry is allowing him to excel professionally. He is often recognized and sought out to share his knowledge. Paul has been sponsored to attend numerous wine seminars throughout the country as well as internationally. These experiences include: the 2003 Global Wine Education Program, the 2004 Russian River Valley Pinot Forum and the 2004 Oregon Pinot Camp. Paul attended The European Wine Education Program involving an intensive two week traveling seminar through the regions of Alsace (France), Rhone (France) and Jerez (Spain) courtesy of the European Communities Marketing Group SOPEXA in 2003.
Paul passed easily through the Newton, Massachusetts school system and then through Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts where he graduated in 1986. More recently, Paul completed the program at the Brown-Forman Center for Global Wine Education in Hopland, California during 2003. He has been a featured Sommelier in the "Chalk Hill Winery Sommelier Guide to Restaurants in America" for four years. Paul is presently studying to become a Certified Wine Educator through the Society of Wine Educators; of which he is a member, and is preparing for the 1st Level exam in the Court of Master Sommeliers.
In addition to working full time at Le Soir, Paul is a wine instructor for the city of Newton Adult Education Program and works as a consultant to individual collectors, restaurants and wine stores.
