| Restaurant Eugene (you can check out their website at www.restauranteugene.com to learn more about them - a wonderful restaurant and wonderful people) has accepted our challenge at 5 Seasons North to finally settle the question: Does Beer or Wine pair better with food? (All parties have agreed that this will be the ultimate decision, for once and for all, and the judges’ decision will be binding on all beer and wine drinkers everywhere.) This is going to be bare-knuckled brawl and a fight to the finish.
Our Chef Dave and Chef Linton Hopkins of Eugene (Atlanta’s representative on the Food Networks’ Iron Chef) share a common philosophy and approach to creating their exceptional menus from local, seasonal, organic produce and are constantly recognized as two of Atlanta’s top chefs, in fact both were selected as Star Chefs for Atlanta. They have worked together to create an incredible six-course menu just for the evening and will be working side by side in the kitchen preparing the feast. Gina Hopkins (co-owner/sommelier of Eugene) is a certified sommelier and has created an award-winning wine program at Restaurant Eugene that has been recognized with the Wine Spectator Award for Excellence for 2005, 2006 and 2007. Gina will pair each course with a wine, while our very own BrewMaster, Crawford, will pair one of his own beers with each course. And yes, he does have something special up his sleeves for the evening. Count on it.
The menu is as follows (the wines and beers are a secret) and might change slightly based upon the whim of the chefs or availability of ingredients:
Seared Jumbo Sea Scallops
Local arugula, balsamic glazed shrunken head hakurei turnips, Killer olive oil and sweetbread croutons
Coq au Biere Rouge
Braised hen with alba mushrooms, house made bacon, leeks and Natural red ale jus
Caraway Crusted Wild Salmon
House made kraut and beurre rouge
Local Beef 2 Ways
Braised Short Ribs and roasted loin, Barleywine horseradish butter and dueling veggies
Blackberry Farms Cheese Plate
Truffle Honey and Spent grain crisp
Chocolate Exotic Spice Cake
Red wine Caramel and Mocha Quinte55ence Ice Cream
